INTERLACE GRANT FUND: INTERLACE EMERGENCY GRANTS
Interlace Emergency Grants are intended to mitigate the harmful effects of emergency situations and crises. These grants are meant to function as small interventions and expressions of support and solidarity with local visual artists. Emergency Grants are open to self-identifying visual artists whose primary residence is within a 10-mile radius of Providence and in the state of Rhode Island. We currently have two funders (The Warhol Foundation and the Rhode Island Foundation) that allow us to distribute a total of $1750 per month in grants of up to $500. If applicants do not receive funding, they may re-apply. If applicants do receive funding but the amount is less than $500, they may re-apply as long as they do not receive more than $500 total during the calendar year.
ELIGIBILITY
- Applicants must currently live within a 10-mile radius of Providence and in the state of Rhode Island
- Applicants must have resided in the Providence area of the state of Rhode Island for at least one year, and be a resident upon receipt of grant funding
- Applicants cannot be enrolled in a degree-granting program
- applicants must be 18+
- applicants cannot be enrolled in a degree-granting program
- Applicants must be able to receive a check in their legal name, if awarded funds
- If applicants do not receive funding, they may re-apply. If applicants do receive funding but the amount is less than $500, they may re-apply as long as they do not receive more than $500 total during the calendar year
In the spirit of generosity and compassion for fellow visual artists, applicants are encouraged to apply using the honor system: if you do not need this grant to mitigate the effects of an emergency situation, please consider forgoing an application to increase the chances for whom these grants would be most beneficial. Grantees will be notified as close to the 7th of the month as possible and no later than the 21st of the month.

Interlace Project Grants provide between $5000 and $6000 for the development and public presentation of new visual art projects by Providence-area artists.
Interlace prioritizes the making of new visual artworks that expand the public’s understanding of the visual arts. The intended outcome of Interlace Project Grants is to make visible often unseen and under-supported artistic activity and to cultivate engaged communities around this work, via collaborations in process and/or presentation.
Eligibility
Lead applicants must currently live within a 10-mile radius of Providence and in the state of Rhode Island (see eligibility map), have resided in the Providence area of the state of Rhode Island for at least one year, and be a resident upon receipt of grant funding. Applicants must be practicing artists, be 18+, and cannot be enrolled in a degree-granting program.
Selection Criteria
Applicants will be judged based on project description, feasibility, and representative work. Specifically, the following criteria will be applied to proposals:
- Overall idea and vision, with an emphasis on the project’s relationship to the visual arts and to collaboration
- Newness of the project, including in what ways the applicant takes risks in their practice/process/work
- Capacity of applicant to realize project on time and within budget
- Potential impact on the artist’s and/or audience's growth
- Relevance to, engagement with, and impact on Providence’s social, cultural, and/or geographic communities, histories, and contexts
Selection Process
The Interlace Grant Fund invites an independent panel to review and select projects for funding. The five-person jury includes national and local artists, curators, and/or arts professionals. All jurors review and rank each proposal based on the stated criteria. During a convening administered by Interlace, panelists have the opportunity to discuss the highest-scoring proposals until they all agree on which projects will be awarded funding and how funds will be allocated. Jurors' identities are announced along with the Project Grant awardees.
Grantee Responsibilities
- At the beginning of the 15-month grant period, Interlace Project Grantees will receive 90% of their grant funds upon return of a signed contract. Once the project is complete, grantees will be required to participate in a short debrief conversation and submit project documentation. The debrief is intended to help recipients reflect on the project in ways that may inform future creative pursuits. The final 10% of grant funds will be disbursed upon receipt of the final report.
- Grantees will maintain communication with Interlace throughout the grant period and participate in a small number of cohort activities.
- Grantees are responsible for at least one free public presentation or sharing of the funded project.
- Grantees are legally responsible for all events, materials, outcomes, etc. connected with their projects.
- Grantees will periodically contribute text, visuals, and other materials for Interlace promotions and archives.
